Development length in Structural Reinforcement
Development Length
Development Length is the shortest length needed for reinforcing bar so that the stresses can induced in the bar can increase from zero to the yield strength of the said bar. The development length is a function of the bar size, yield strength, concrete strength and other factors such as coating of the bar. Also, the development length of a bar is dependent to whether the bar is in tension or compression. Tension development lengths are larger than compression development lengths because in compression, the reinforcing bar gets some help from the concrete, while in tension it does not.
